I am excited to announce that I am running for Boulder County Commissioner in 2020. As a social worker, progressive activist, and a legislator, I have served Boulder County on the front lines for 20 years. I hope to continue that work as your next County Commissioner.
At the State Capitol, I fought for progressive causes and won. I helped to expand healthcare and mental healthcare to thousands of Coloradans. I supported Longmont’s fracking ban and stood up to the oil and gas industry to pass historic legislation that allows local governments to fight back against polluters. I worked side by side with our immigrant community to make sure everyone has access to drivers licenses and repealed the “Show Me Your Papers” law that forced local police to act as ICE agents. I authored the Marijuana Tax which provided over one hundred million dollars for Colorado’s schools, fought against wage theft, picketed with unions, accomplished meaningful criminal justice reform, passed gun safety bills, expanded renewable energy, and protected public lands.
In 2018, after the birth of my son William, after living in the same apartment for 14 years I found out my landlord was doubling my rent . My family was almost forced to move out of Boulder County because we could not find an affordable place to live. Luckily we were able to find a housing situation that worked for us thanks to the generosity of our family. The problems real families in Boulder County face are personal to me.
As County commissioner, I will protect open spaces, advocate for green jobs and crack down on fracking, enforce a moratorium on evictions and ensure that everyone, regardless of income or race, is able to obtain healthcare and support during this crisis.
From affordable health care, child care, and housing to sustainability and prioritizing our health and safety over fracking, we can do great things by working together. I would be honored to have your support.
“On June 15, the last day of the session, Colorado lawmakers approved a bill granting the state's governor the right to expunge low-level marijuana crimes from the records of people arrested or charged before the plant was legalized in late 2012…
The move was a ninth-inning walk-off for Representative Jonathan Singer, who pushed the amendment with just a few days left before he's term-limited out of the House. The measure was the very last bill to pass in the 2020 legislative session.”
…Several Colorado lawmakers lamented that because the legislature is not meeting right now — the Capitol was shut down two weeks ago over coronavirus fears — it has no ability to respond nimbly to this and other crises. State Rep. Jonathan Singer, D-Longmont, said that if the session were going on now, he’d push a bill for a temporary moratorium on evictions and foreclosures for people who’ve suffered income loss.
"We're going to get justice. It's going to be too late for Ty, but it's not going to be too late for the next kid if we pass this bill," said Singer.
Domestic violence abusers with protection orders are supposed to surrender their weapons under Colorado law, but Contact7 Investigates found the law isn't working as intended.
“We can talk about the health effects, the economic effects, what it’s going to do in terms of climate change, but what really makes a difference in my life is seeing 12, 13, 15 and 16 year olds standing up and talking truth to power,” said Singer.
As a lifetime environmentalist, there’s only one candidate for Boulder County commissioner we can count on to protect our environment for our community and future generations. Jonathan Singer has more than compassion and caring when it comes to environmental issues; he is the only candidate with the record to prove it.
“…In all the time I have known Singer and his beautiful family, I have come to respect his strength, courage and integrity. I also admire his positive attitude and cheerfulness.
Based on my long experience working with elected county officials, I cannot think of anyone who would be a better county commissioner than Jonathan Singer, especially in this time of crisis. Please join me in voting for Singer in the Colorado primary.”
“We have worked with Rep. Jonathan Singer for years, and we hope you’ll join us in supporting him for Boulder County commissioner. He’s an environmental advocate, an expert on health and human services, a partner in the fight for social justice, and a voice for people who are often forgotten. Plus, he’s a proven public servant — with eight years in the Colorado House of Representatives — who is ready to take on the multitude of issues the job of commissioner entails…”
From the cost of living to protecting the environment, Boulder County is facing many important issues.
